  • VideoOutSleep (TV Stick app)

Android TV Sticks are becoming more and more popular.

But they seem to lack the ability to switch the TV off and on.

I made an app (TaskScheduler) which made it possible to schedule a time to switch the TV output off or on.

But users asked for a way to switch it off with a button.

    So I made this app.

    Here is the idea :

    * When you launch the app, it powers the HDMI output off.
    * The app stays open and waits for a key or a mouse button to be pressed.
    * Then it powers the HDMI on again and quits.

So it acts like a manual screen saver.
TV sticks seem to go to a low power consumption mode when they are not doing anything, so it should not be a problem to let them powered on.

Notice that the app automatically switches the screen on when it quits. So if you have a task killer that ends the app, it will power the screen on again, so you shouldn't be stuck with a powered off screen and a TV stick still powered on.

Something to notice : It was reported that when the HDMI video is switched off, the TV sound is also switched off.

So this app won't let you listen to music on your TV while it is sleeping (unless you have an audio out on your stick powered to your TV or another source.

You can download it here : VideoOutSleep_v0.2.1.apk

If you have problems or comments, feel free to say it. Any feedback is welcome.
    Enjoy.

If you don't want the HDMI audio to be switched off as well, and if you don't need the TV to be really switched off, I also made a simple "black screen" app which also exits on any key press. Here it is :

    BlackScreen_v0.2.2.apk

For older devices (before ICS) : BlackScreeBasic_v0.1.1.apk

New version, which displays a bouncing clock on Android > 3.0 (on Android < 3.0, it is just a black screen) :
    * BlackScreen-0.3.0.apk

On this last version, you have a Settings app where you can enable or disable the clock, and adjust its size.
The settings screen is ugly now : I'll try to make it look better.

    Petrus.

Petrus, I tested it and it works on my MK808. I have not tested it yet on others.

I have found an issue with the app.
If I launch the app from within XBMC the screen flashes black then back on, it also does this when launching the app from the Nova launcher app drawer.
The app launches just fine from Nova launcher desktop.

I have a MK808B Running rooted stock firmware.

If no one else has any issues, I will just do a full wipe.
and / or try finless 1.5
      Thanks!!

        Thanks for the feedback.

        Is your firmware rooted?
        If not it won't work.

If it is rooted, maybe the issue is due to how xbmc handles launching apps.
I don't know about nova launcher, but it should act as a normal launcher, which should not cause problems.

The way it acts on your device suggests that the app is launched then exited. The "Screen on" command is issued only when the app exits. Maybe your launcher detects the screen being switched off and ends the app currently running?

I'm not sure you read my post correctly.
Either way I'll try a full wipe and Report back.

Ok sorry, I missed the part where you said it works well from the nova desktop.
So it really seems like a problem with the way the app is launched.
Maybe I'll try to make a configuration menu as well, to handle how the on/off commands are triggrered.

But it'll need some more time.

              Working on MK802 IIIs

              Hi,

A small word to report that it is working nicely on my key. The screen goes effectively to sleep :-)
When I click the left mouse button, the screen wakes up.

Can you combine this finding with the taskscheduler? So we can set a time to switch off the HDMI output AND we can use the mouse/keyboard to wake up the TV :-)

              Many thanks

... is there a way when i only want to listen to music, that i can switch off screen BUT sound over HDMI is working further? When screen is off, the sound stops. I want to avoid burn in on my plasma.

                Hope somebody have a Tip?
Perhaps somebody can make a app with a whole black screen (without ads) ?

                EDIT:
I solved it with "Plasma Saver" from playstore ;-)

                best regards
                Craxx;-)

                  Re: VideoOutSleep (TV Stick app)

If a black screen is enough for you, I'll try to figure something simple when I have time next week.

This app is very nice to have - if I could make just one feature request it would be to have a password or pin prompt on wake. Thanks for the great work!

About your feature request, asking for a password or a PIN on wake is way beyond the scope of this app. I mean if it has to be in a secure way. I can implement it, but there will be many ways to bypass it, unless it is integrated as a Lock Screen.

But it would rely on the ability of the system to provide a lock screen, which I'm not sure TV stick ROMs have. If someone have successfully setup a lock screen on one of these devices, please tell me. I may be wrong.

Correct... lock screen has been removed from TV player roms. I am getting a lot of requests to add it back. I will look into it when I get time.
